The dog followed me home that night, though I tried to chase it off a couple of times.
The third time I turned to kick at it, I noticed the mangy fur, the sunken, sad eyes, and the way it favoured its left front leg.
I didn’t chase it.
I didn’t encourage it either, but it followed me all the way home, up the stairs to my little dingy apartment. The building allowed pets but I hadn’t bothered to get a new dog after Bugsy passed away in his sleep two years ago.
I still had his things, just no dog food.
I fed my new friend some canned stew without heating it first. He swallowed it without chewing. He drank a full bowl of water and sat on the kitchen floor, tongue hanging out and tail slowly beating the lino.
He was a little larger than Bugsy had been, but not by much. He was brown and white with medium length hair, and those brown eyes hooked me quicker than any bass I’d ever caught at the lake.
I found Bugsy’s old harness, relieved to find that it fit. Added the leash and took him for a walk.
The neighbour kids asked his name, I said he didn’t have one yet. They suggested Killer, Rover, Fluffy, Dragon.
The next day I made an appointment with the vet, for that front leg, and I said his name was Friendly.
Seemed as good a name as any.
The vet said he was probably about two years old and the leg was sprained. Gave me some tips on how to treat the injury and how to help Friendly gain weight and get healthy. I got some proper dog food following the vet’s instructions and we’ve been together ever since.
It’s been five years and he greets me at the door every day after work. I take him for a spin around the block and then we both have dinner. After we eat we go to the park and he plays with the neighbourhood kids, who all seem to be okay with the name I chose. They throw balls for him and some of them bring little treats from home. Their parents are glad of Friendly because he helps keep the kids out of trouble.
Yup, never would have guessed that taking in that mutt would have worked out so well for us both, but I should have.
Never know when something nice you do for someone –- or something -- else will work out for the best, for both of you.
