“Which number is he on now?” Danyel Droullin, Lord Bonsolrd, asked Gabriel de Faucon, Duke Rorflrod, who was sitting next to him on the pew.
Gabriel shook his head. “You had better not let His Majesty hear you refer to his wives like that.”
Danyel snorted. “Why not? He disposes of them like he changes his underclothes. What the girl’s name?”
“Lady Martine Bauldry, daughter of the Baron Nolline.”
“Hump. I suppose that’s why the council has new members?”
Gabriel nodded.
The two men watched the King say his vows to the young Martine. The girl looked lovely what with her dark curls falling down her back. Her dress was light blue with lace at the sleeves.
“I see she’s pregnant,” Danyel said scooting up. “The King surely does work fast.”
Gabriel laughed at that. “I wonder if it’s a boy?”
Danyel joined in on the laughter. “With the King’s luck, it’ll probably be another girl. Which would make it daughter number…?” Danyel trailed off.
“Daughter number five. At least as far legitimacy goes!” Gabriel said wiping a tear from his eye.
“Ah yes. I wonder if the new Queen knows that His Majesty is seeing that tart Noelle? She just gave birth to a big healthy boy. Too bad he’s a bastard.”
“I wouldn’t underestimate Lady Noelle. Remember the King placed her brother, Marc, on the council. She has her eyes everywhere.”
Danyel frowned and rubbed his chin. “Of course I had forgotten about that brat.”
The priest pronounced King Henri and the new Queen man and wife. Henri smiled and pulled Martine into his arms and gave her a long kiss.
“Now it is time to feast!” Danyel said standing.

“I propose a toast to the King and his lovely queen, Martine!” Marc de Valles stood and tipped his cup towards Martine. She smiled and blushed.
“Spring water for Her Majesty,” Henri said rubbing Martine’s growing belly. The guests laughed and drank to their new Queen.
Danyel took a bite of the lemon chicken and chuckled. His plate was filled with all different types of chicken. He counted lemon, lime, orange and some type of red flavored chicken. The King had certainly went all out with impressing his guests.
“I don’t recall the King doing all this for his other wives.” Danyel said to Gabriel who was sitting next to him sipping a deep crimson wine.
“I remember when he married Queen Jeanne. Now that was something to behold of!” Gabriel said picking up his fork and spearing a pea.
“I was in the country when that wedding took place. I do remember when he married Queen Analise. Though her father wanted them to have a traditional Kontian wedding,” Danyel said tearing off a piece of sweet bread.
“Yes, that was certainly interesting,” Gabriel agreed.
“My fair lords,” said a voice.
Danyel and Gabriel looked up. The king stood before them with his arm around the Queen. Danyel started to blush, the Queen was truly breathtaking. It had to be sad that the King had a good taste in women.
The two men bowed their heads.
“How beautiful is my wife?” Henri asked. “There are none fairer, more pure than or as lovely as Martine!”
The King sure is boastful. Thought Danyel, but he smiled at the King.
“Yes, Lady Martine is very beautiful, Your Majesty,” Danyel said.
“Queen Martine,” Martine herself said. She had a lovely voice.
Henri laughed and kissed Martine on the forehead. “Yes, you forget yourself, Bonsolrd. My Lady’s coronation is set for a week from today,” Henri said grinning at them.
“It will be lovely, my Lord,” Martine said smiling up at Henri. “I’m sure your councilors have planned a most magnificent one.”
“Of course.”
“Will the children be there?” Gabriel asked suddenly.
“Henri and Abigail are too young, but the elder three shall be there.”
“Princess Marie is truly lovely,” Gabriel said blushing.
Henri shot him a stern look. “Should I be looking forward to a marriage with my daughter and yourself, Rolfrod?”
Gabriel blushed deeply and shook his head. “No, Your Majesty. The princess is too grand a sight for me.”
Henri laughed again. “My daughter is very pious and serious. I think she’d be to sedate for you, Rolfrod. You need someone lively. Like maybe Lady Celine?” The King said rubbing his bearded chin.
Martine clapped her hands. “Yes, Celine is very lovely. My sister is very easy on the eyes.”
Gabriel was stunned. “Your Majesty would have me marry the Queen’s sister?”
Henri nodded. “Why not? You’ve been single for far too long. The Duchess has been dead for four years now I believe? You can get sons on Lady Celine.”
Gabriel blushed. “Whatever my Majesty commands.”
“Good. I’ll see you at tomorrow’s council meeting gentlemen, provided I don’t wear myself out with my lovely wife the night before.”
Martine giggled as the King directed her to the next table.
Danyel finished his chicken and sipped his wine. “Well Gabriel, you’ve got yourself a lovely betrothed, just like the King.”
Gabriel nodded. “I do hope I have better luck in my second marriage than the King has had in his.”
